Fire Risk Assessments
Article 9 of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 places a duty and responsibility upon the responsible person (legal term) to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to which relevant persons are exposed for the purpose of identifying the general fire precautions he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed on him by or under The Order. In most cases this assessment of risk needs to be recorded.
The responsible person can of course, conduct and record the fire risk assessment themselves however, before doing so should ask themselves if they have the necessary knowledge and understanding of fire safety legislation, building regulations, licencing regulations, preventative and protective fire safety systems, and a whole host of other information which needs to be considered in conducting a comprehensive fire risk assessment. Don’t forget the fire risk assessment is a legal requirement and the person conducting and recording the assessment is accountable in law for the findings and contents. Getting it wrong is not an option!
